about

Emerald
It’s my fake Monk tune. It owes so much to “Pannonica” and “Ruby, My Dear”, and even a little piece of “Bye-Ya”. The ruby went to emerald, in tribute to Erin’s birthstone. I’ve always been proud of the melody and especially the harmony on the bridge. I can’t remember writing it, but it ended up in the score for “The Kid” in a humorous scene, and it always maintained an atmosphere of happy revelry. When performed with all three lines and the quadruple time feel in the last section it was the closest I ever came to “wow check out my big band chart.” Jeff Reilly was the master of the drunken surprise drums for this one.
